Jamie Chadwick has made history as the first female racer to stand on the top step of the podium in the European Le Mans Series LMP2 class, triumphing at the season-opening 4 Hours of Barcelona.
Teaming up with fellow IDEC Sport debutants Daniel Juncadella and Mathys Jaubert, the No. 18 car crossed the line second overall but claimed first in class following a stellar team effort.
After qualifying P5 on Saturday, Jamie took the wheel for the opening stint in the No. 18 IDEC Sport car, delivering a clean drive during her first competitive laps in ELMS.
Extending her stint longer than most of the opening runners, Jamie sat P3 overall when she pitted under a Virtual Safety Car period 87 minutes into the race, handing over to Daniel.
The Spaniard kept the No. 18 firmly in contention throughout his run, before passing the baton to Mathys with 80 minutes to go, again during a VSC period.
The 18-year-old Frenchman was immediately in the thick of the action after the restart, taking the lead in both class and overall with 50 minutes remaining. A late Safety Car allowed AF Corse’s No. 83 LMP2 Pro/Am entry to capitalise on fresher tyres and snatch the overall victory – but it wasn’t enough to stop Jamie and her teammates from securing P1 in class.
